What is a permanent residence visa application?

Permanent Resident Permit and Status of Residence "Permanent Resident" in Japan
With a status of residence (visa) there will be no restrictions on the kind of activities you can undertake and you will be able to choose your career and life style freely.

However, even if you become a permanent resident, your nationality will not be automatically changed and you also have no "suffrage," which means the right to participate in politics. In certain cases, such as commiting crimes, the permanent residence permit may be revoked.The basic requirements for a permanent residence permit are as follows:


(1)Good behavior and conduct with compliance with the law and being a responsible resident.


(2)Having sufficient assets or ability to make an independent living, can contribute to the society and should be able to live a stable life in the future with his/her assets and skills.


(3)The holder of permanent residency should act in accordance to the interest of Japan.

  • Having 10 consecutive years as a resident in Japan, including 5 years under a work visa or those who are granted according to the family status (Spouse of Japanese national, Long Term Resident...)
  • Have not been subjected to any fine or sentenced to imprisonment. Fulfillment of public obligations, such as tax payment.
  • The applicant must reside in Japan with the maximum period of stay as specified in Appendix 2 of the Enforcement Regulations of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act with respect to the status of residence he/she currently holds.
  • Must follow the rules / guidelines of public health and abstain from any harm.

However, in the case of the spouse or child of a Japanese national, permanent resident, compliance with (1) and (2) are not required.
For those who have been granted with refugee status, compliance with (2) is not required.

In addition, there are special provisions regarding the exceptions of requiring 10 consecutive years as residence, which are as follows.

  • In the case of the spouse or child of a Japanese national, permanent resident, or special permanent resident, the applicant must be married for at least three years and residing in Japan for at least one year. (In the case of a biological child, the child must have stayed in Japan for at least one year. It is advised to hold a spouse visa with at least a period of stay of 3 years before the application.
  • Having a guarantor (Japanese national or permanent resident visa holder) to support the application.
    Stayed in Japan physically for more than 6 months up to 12 months period prior to and during the application process.
  • Resident in Japan for 5 years or more with "Permanent Resident" status.
  • After being granted as certified refugee, the applicant must be residing in Japan for at least 5 years continuously.
  • Those who are recognized to have contributed to the society, economy, and culture of Japan etc., and resided in Japan for 5 years or more.

However, this is just a basic requirements, other various requirements are required to obtain a permanent residence permit.
